Sounds connected with aircraft overflights (air tours, general aviation, military functions, and high altitude commercial jet aircraft) are an essential management problem at Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP). In 1987, the National Parks Overflight Act (P.L. 100-91) was approved requiring the National Park Service (NPS) and the Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to work together to attain "large restoration of the natural calm" in GCNP. The draft EIS was created as a plan to address the effects of aircraft noise on visitor experience and park resources
Volpe has helped the NPS and FAA with the disturbance research to aid the firms within their attempts to handle the overflights troubles at Grand Canyon National Park GCNP.
